Relationship and Marriage Counseling

I have discovered that problems arise in relationships from a variety of sources:
• The stress of modern life
• Problems with drugs or alcohol
• The huge job of child rearing
• Unresolved issues from earlier in life that visit the relationship
• Injuries that have accrued over the course of the relationship
• Conflict with extended family
• Lack of understanding of the differences between men and women
• Failure to view the relationship as a treasure that needs continual attention and nourishment

For more than 45 years I have been working as a relationship therapist helping couples dance together in a more loving and harmonious way. My primary approach is to help each partner find within themselves the love that potentially lies at the heart of every relationship. I take an approach of curiosity and teaching rather than fault-finding or blame. Instead of trying to figure out who is wrong, we will be working in partnership to resolve problems.

Peggy, my wife of 50-plus years, sits in on all couple marriage counseling sessions to lend her perspective as a wife, a mother, and a woman. The couples appreciate her quiet steady presence and feminine viewpoint.

The counseling process begins with the first phone call, when a conversation usually develops to explore the initial reason for seeking counseling. Often we will get both members of the couple plus Peggy and myself on the phone to lay the groundwork for our collaboration. The first session is often a two to three-hour in-depth exploration to identify the nature of the problems, to evaluate their source, and to agree upon a course of action. Sometimes that one session totally resolves the question on the table.  If we decide on follow-up work that usually includes weekly sessions and homework that is specifically tailored to your unique needs as a couple. We often hold counseling sessions for an extended time—anything from an extra half hour to several hours. We are available to keep going until the issue on the table is resolved.

What Clients Have Said  about Therapy

Our fee for couples work is $140 for a one-hour session. Though most insurance companies will not pay for couples work, some will. Each company is different. Let’s talk about insurance over the phone.

Every person who offers counseling in the State of Washington is required to describe their work and credentials in a Disclosure Statement. Be sure to read this: Disclosure Statement
